Why Does All-Wheel Drive Change the Answer?
All-wheel drive changes the answer because every wheel is mechanically tied to the drivetrain, so a wheel that is rolling on the pavement is turning parts that were never meant to spin while the car is being pulled. On a front-wheel-drive car you can lift the driven wheels and let the free-rolling pair do the work. On an AWD or 4WD vehicle there is no free-rolling pair.
The principle is not folklore. NHTSA states plainly that vehicles can be damaged if they are towed on their drive axle, and directs owners to the manual for the correct method. On an all-wheel-drive vehicle, every axle is a drive axle — which is why flatbed towing in Corona is the default recommendation rather than an upsell.
Two related cases behave the same way. Some four-wheel-drive systems cannot be safely towed with wheels down even in neutral, and certain automatic transmissions rely on the engine running to circulate fluid, so being dragged without lubrication is the damaging part. Both point at the same truck.
Do You Actually Know What Your Car Drives?
Check the owner's manual first — it names the drivetrain and gives the manufacturer's own towing instructions, which override any general advice including this page. Four other checks take a minute:
- Badging. AWD, 4WD, 4x4, xDrive, quattro, 4MATIC and similar badges on the tailgate or fenders all mean more than two driven wheels.
- The window sticker. If you still have the original Monroney sticker, the drivetrain is listed on it.
- A VIN lookup. Your VIN decodes to the exact build, including drivetrain.
- The dealer or manufacturer line. Year, make, model and trim is enough for them to tell you.
A caution worth stating: badges get removed, and trim levels within the same model often mix front-wheel and all-wheel drive. If you are not certain, say so. A dispatcher would far rather send a flatbed you did not strictly need than a wheel lift that damages a transfer case.
Is It Electric or Hybrid?
Electric and hybrid vehicles need a flatbed for the same mechanical reason, with an electric motor in place of a transfer case. NHTSA's guidance is that EVs and hybrids require extra care when towed because they can be damaged if towed on their drive axle, and that the owner's manual is where the correct towing method is specified.
Two more EV facts change what you should ask for on the phone. A dead high-voltage battery cannot be jump started — NHTSA notes that only the 12-volt battery, the one running lights and instruments, can be jumped like a conventional car's. And a damaged lithium-ion pack is treated as a fire risk: NHTSA advises not parking a vehicle with a damaged lithium-ion battery in a garage or within 50 feet of a house, another structure, another vehicle, or anything combustible.
That last point is worth repeating to whoever is receiving the car. If your EV has been in a collision or through standing water, the destination matters as much as the truck.
